A private tour can give a family room to linger, help a returning visitor explore a new interest, or turn a short business trip into a memorable day. The useful first question is what you want to understand and experience. The number of landmarks comes later.

Describe the day before choosing the route

Give a prospective guide a brief that includes where you are staying, your available hours, the people travelling with you and your main interests. Jewish heritage, archaeology, food and contemporary city life can lead to very different itineraries, even within the same city.

Choose two or three priorities and identify anything you can comfortably skip. A family with young children may need regular breaks; a visitor tracing a particular historical period may prefer a longer conversation at one site. Ask the guide to explain what the proposed day leaves out and why. That answer can reveal more about the fit than a long list of stops.

Check the guide and the working language

Israel’s Ministry of Tourism maintains a guide register searchable by name or licence number. Use it to check the details supplied, then confirm who will actually lead your tour. When booking through an agency, ask whether the named guide is confirmed and what happens if a substitute is needed.

Have a short conversation in the language you intend to use throughout the day. Explain the level of detail you enjoy and any subject you particularly want covered. Language fluency and subject knowledge are separate questions. A useful conversation lets both sides judge the match before money changes hands.

Compare the complete booking, not just the headline price

Request a written quotation showing the guiding fee, transport, entrance tickets and any other planned charges. Clarify whether meals, parking, waiting time and extra hours are included or paid separately. If a vehicle is involved, confirm passenger capacity, luggage space and any child seating you require.

Two quotations become comparable only when they cover the same service. A walking tour ending in the city centre is different from a day with hotel collection and a return transfer. Agree the payment currency, deposit, remaining balance and payment method. Ask for the final amount payable and keep the booking confirmation.

Make the route work for the people taking it

Discuss walking distances, stairs, shade, seating and toilet breaks before the itinerary is final. Describe practical access needs directly rather than relying on a broad label such as easy or accessible. Ask which parts involve uneven surfaces and whether an alternative route changes the experience.

For religious sites, confirm visiting arrangements and appropriate clothing with the guide. Check opening times and any reservations for the actual date. Leave space between appointments: transfers, queues and a worthwhile conversation can all take longer than a neat schedule suggests. A realistic itinerary should still work when one stop runs late.

Set the change arrangements before departure

Get the cancellation, rescheduling and refund terms in writing, including how the provider handles a site becoming unavailable or a change in official instructions. Establish who will contact whom, by which channel, and when the final route will be confirmed. Keep the meeting point, start time and guide’s telephone number together.

Before paying, send a short recap of the agreed day: participants, language, priorities, route, inclusions and total price. Ask the provider to confirm it. A well chosen private guide gives your visit structure while leaving room for curiosity. Clear arrangements free you to enjoy the places you came to see.
